Both videos were intriguing but the second which tackled our changing media landscape was moreso. Nonetheless, the first video tackled the idea of Institution vs. Collaboration. As I viewed the video, I tried to consider how it was analogous to education. That being said, there was discussion of how institutions are prearranged with a certain structure of organized goals including whose in charge, how things will work, etc. Undoubtedly, education is an institution. My mind automatically wandered away from the video and into thoughts of: If we are to collaborate in our school building, why is it still run with a prearranged structure that never seems to budge? If collaboration is so important amongst students, why isn't that importance communicated and modeled amongst staff and administrators...When my thoughts returned to the video, I was struck by this: "Average and middle aren't the same." I'm still chewing on this profound statement.
The second video didn't attack something new, but I did enjoy the pointed discussion of our global (changing) media landscape. It is not at all surprising that we are amidst the largest increase in creative expression in human history. Prior to viewing the video I had not considered how the Internet has taken all previous forms of communication and offered them up in a complete package...amazing when you take the time to ponder how the Internet has become not just an information source but a source of coordination where anyone can be a producer not just a consumer, where anyone can talk back, where everyone can be connected. My challenge as an educator has to be how to make the best use of available media.
What a media landscape our children are learning and growing up in!
